January 24th – The Freedom Riders Documentary
The Freedom Riders is a documentary film about the people, the organizing, and the movement that challenged segregation in 1961. Please join us at 7pm on January 24th to view this important film in an early celebration of Black History Month.
Starting in May of 1961, mixed groups of blacks and whites began taking interstate buses into the Deep South, risking their lives to challenge segregation. They called themselves the Freedom Riders. White mobs responded with violence, but the riders refused to back down and their numbers continued to grow throughout the summer. Their bold challenge expanded the limits of dissent and set the stage for the civil rights movement. Using news film and photographs taken at the time and interviews with participants, this documentary chronicles a defining moment in US history.
