Eli Conley and Hip for Squares

November 18, 2011

Eli Conley and Hip for Squares played a great show at In Other Words on July 31st.

Eli had this to say about sharing our space:

My name is Eli Conley, and I played at In Other Words on tour with my band Eli Conley and Hip for Squares in July 2011. Our Bay Area-based Americana trio had a really wonderful time playing at the bookstore and feminist community center. As a gay transgender man with radical politics, many of my songs draw on themes of social justice, like breaking down the idea that there’s any such thing as a “real” man or woman, and making connections between mountaintop removal mining and the increase in supermax prisons being built in Appalachia, where my dad’s side of the family is from.

I’m joined in my band by Talia Cooper, a Jewish feminist singer/songwriter and youth worker, and Maia “Papaya” Wiitala, who plays upright bass with us, and is also a feminist anti-racist hip hop MC. Maia Papaya opened up for our show with some of her hip hop, and I have to say that In Other Words is one of the few spaces that would be totally open to host a show encompassing both hip hop and acoustic music in one night. I also really appreciate that the space is all ages. And of course, I think all three of us ended up buying books while we were there!  Ultimately, it felt really good to perform at In Other Words because it is a space that is welcoming of all of who we are as a band — folk musicians, anti-racists, queer people, activists, feminists, transgender people. Many thanks to the board, the volunteers, and everyone who makes up the In Other Words community for having us. I can’t wait to come back!
Take care,
Eli
