Openings on the In Other Words Board of Directors

July 2, 2012

In Other Words is a non-profit, volunteer-run, feminist community center in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to support, enrich, and empower the feminist community through literature, art, and educational and cultural events. We have a storefront that serves as a book store, a lending library, and a venue for feminist events.

Are you interested in being a leader in a grassroots, volunteer-run, and local non-profit? Are you a visionary?

In Other Words (IOW) is actively looking to recruit new leadership for the Board of Directors. IOW has been growing, changing and expanding from a feminist bookstore to a feminist community center despite some significant setbacks. IOW is an organization full of life and feminist spirit.

As we enter the next phase of our transition we are looking for leadership that can provide expertise and guidance to board members and volunteers in implementing the transition plans and involving the community in the direction of the organization. We are in a strategic planning process with a variety of stakeholders which will identify short-term and long-term goals as we move towards our shared vision of what a feminist community center will look like. New board leadership will provide guidance and support for board members, volunteers and the community as we go through this process.

Applying for a leadership position could be an amazing opportunity for you to gain experience with an organization in transition and lend your skills to a feminist non-profit as it evolves. The IOW Board consists of a Chair and Co-chair positions, Personnel, Development, Finance, and Board Development Committees.

In Other Words seeks leaders with skills or expertise in one or more of the following:

  • Legal: experience with or knowledge of laws concerning non-profits, their activities or liabilities
  • Human Resources: understanding or experience with policy, personnel and internal communications
  • Development: specifically with donor cultivation, grant writing, fundraising campaigns
  • Volunteer Management and Coordination
  • PR and Marketing
  • Community Organizing
  • Publishing: promoting literature and educational events and classes

Please email with questions or to obtain a full description of the positions.
