B*tch Media presents Beyond Judy Blume

October 17, 2012

Every 3rd Thursday the Adult/Young Adult Boook Club meets at In Other Words to take a feminist/queer lens to popular young adult fiction. We’re also home to the Feminist/Queer Science Fiction/Fantasy Reading Group which is meeting tonight at 6:30PM to talk about The Onion Girl by Charles de Lint, the Figures of Speech Reading Group, and the Progressive Elders Reading Group. Whew! That’s a lot of books!

But I know what voracious readers you feminists are, which is why I’m pleased to say that our feminist neighbors down the street at Bitch Media are hosting a book club this fall.

Beyond Judy Blume: Identity and Sexuality in Young Adult Literature“, had their first meeting in September and will continue meeting once a month through November. This coming Tuesday, October 23rd, the group will meet at SMYRC to tackle the issues faced by trans* teens in Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger:

While coming out as transgender feels right to Grady, he isn’t prepared for the reaction he gets. He’s lost his best friend and his family isn’t acknowledging the importance of his transition, but he ends up finding a surprising new support system. Parrotfish details Grady’s struggle for acceptance and his search for identity, and his musings on gender will resonate with all readers.

You can find more information and RSVP at the event’s Facebook page.

Bitch Media’s mission is to provide and encourage an engaged, thoughtful feminist response to mainstream media and popular culture. They are a Portland-based organization and can be found online at
