We Are Staying Open!

November 14, 2014

Feminists! Please read this message from our newly-elected Board of Directors at In Other Words:

“At the November 8, 2014 General Assembly meeting, the newly elected Board of Directors announced that we’re committed to keeping In Other Words open through December 2015.

As a new board, our first priority has been to make that decision in good faith—both in terms of financial sustainability and also social responsibility. As a volunteer-run organization, your commitment is what keeps the doors open.  And your commitment has been visible: you packed the house at our first General Assembly, we have over 45 new volunteers, and our Indiegogo campaign and other financial donations have helped us raise almost $15,000 in the last few weeks.

However, we have a lot of work to do to ensure the space is still what our community wants and needs.  It must evolve as feminism evolves, and it’s going to take a lot of open conversation and work with different groups within the community.  One of the biggest areas we’ll be working on is to make sure the space is safer for all.  As a new board, we’ve received a lot of feedback from women of color, trans women, and the transgender and non-binary community saying that In Other Words hasn’t done a good job of making them feel welcome and safe.  We are committed to transectionality and inclusiveness, and creating an environment free from oppression.  If you have advice, ideas or just want to share your experiences, so that we can work to that goal, email board@inotherwords.org.

We have a lot of energy from new volunteers, and a lot of wisdom and commitment from long-term volunteers, and we’re very hopeful about the future.  Thank you for your time, your passion, and your voices.  Remember that this space is yours, and let’s work together to make it worthy of us all.”
